PURPOSE:
This policy establishes a procedure for selecting names for City parks.
BACKGROUND:
A memorandum from the City Manager dated February 7, 1964, subject "Recommendations of the Council Public Relations Committee concerning the naming of City parks," was furnished the Council prior to the meeting, a copy of which is on file with the record of the minutes. The policy was modified on September 14, 1982. POLICY:
1) Parks located and adjacent to schools be given the same name as the school except the word "street," "road," "lane," "way," etc. be dropped from the name of the park if the park is not on the same street, road, etc., as the school.

2) Names for parks not adjacent to schools will be selected by the City Council from names submitted by the Culture Commission in accordance with the following procedure:
a. The Culture Commission will direct staff to publicize the need for Modesto citizens to submit names to them that would be considered for use as the name of a particular park. Suggestions will be accepted for a period of thirty (30) days.
b. After a period of thirty (30) days, the suggested park names will be turned over to the Culture Commission.
c. The Culture Commission will review the suggested names and select no more than three (3) names to be sent to the City Council for its consideration.
d. Each name submitted to the City Council will be accompanied by a brief report as to why the park name submitted should be used.
e. The attached form shall be used by citizens when suggesting a park name.
3) An exception to the above procedure would be made when the park has been made possible by a public spirited citizen and the Council determines it appropriate to name the park after the citizen or a name suggested by the citizen.
