CHAPTER 12.06 STREET NAME STANDARDS
§ 12.06.010. Definitions.
For purposes of this chapter, the following words or phrases and their derivations shall have the meanings given as follows:
"Private street" means streets not administered by a governmental authority which provide access to and are maintained by a limited number of property owners.
"Public street" means any street under the control of the governmental authority dedicated to public use, which have been accepted into a public maintenance system.
"Streets" means all travelways, future and existing within the city. (Ord. 442 § 1, 1989)
§ 12.06.020. Purpose and intent.
The purpose of this chapter and any rules, regulations and standards adopted pursuant to this chapter is to provide standards for naming streets. The intent of the standards is to cause legible identification of interesting street names which reflect the characteristics, environment and heritage of the city and desert. The standards should help avoid duplication or confusion with similar names in the city and its environs, provide continuity of aligned streets as they cross other streets, provide relationship of the name with the street function, facilitate easily understood addressing, increase traffic safety and decrease emergency response time by avoidance of confusion caused by lack of standards.

§ 12.06.030. Street names—Required.
All proposed streets, both public and private, shall be named, except as otherwise provided in this chapter. (Ord. 442 § 1, 1989)
§ 12.06.040. Application—Required.
Application for street names and/or changes of existing street names shall be filed with the planning division of the community development department. (Ord. 442 § 1, 1989)
§ 12.06.050. Review procedure.
Street names associated with the development of private streets in new subdivisions shall be subject to the approval of the director. All newly created public streets and street name changes shall be subject to the review and approval of the planning commission pursuant to the procedures set forth in Chapter 17.58 of this code.

§ 12.06.060. Standards.
A. There shall be no duplication of street names nor shall there be any close phonetic approximation of names of streets within Rancho Mirage or between allowed street names in Rancho Mirage and streets elsewhere in the Coachella Valley.
B. New street names or street name changes creating names using numbers or letters are prohibited.
C. Street names shall be easy to read, pronounce and spell.
D. Street names shall be grammatically correct whether in English or a foreign language.
E. Street name selection shall be based upon or shall relate to desert themes, names of historic significance, or names relating to a stated development theme.
F. Short cul-de-sacs of less than five interior lots need not be named if their house numbers can be in series with those of the street from which they access.
G. Street name continuity between aligned streets on either side of a cross street shall be provided or preserved.
H. A continuous road, or one proposed to be continuous shall have the same name throughout its length.
I. All street names shall reflect their characteristics, classification and function in accordance with the criteria below:

§ 12.06.070. Standards—Compliance required.
Street names shall comply with Section 12.06.060 of this chapter and all other provisions of this chapter. (Ord. 442 § 1, 1989)
