Gulliver had a difficult time readjusting to life in Europe as he was accustomed to the virtues of the Houyhnhnms. Gulliver hold a cloth with rue or tobacco to his nose so he cannot smell the city, which Gulliver could not stand. The same image appears in both the 1839 and 1843 Krabbe editions.
